Job Brief

The primary role of Quality Assurance (QA) Laboratory Technician II’s is to ensure that all products conform to the highest quality and consistency standards. Using GMPs for craft breweries and the SFCR as a guideline, the QA laboratory technician will develop our HACCP plan, an environmental monitoring plan, and a pre-requisite program that will keep the brewery within internal and external regulatory limits.

Additional duties will include quality control checks of all in-process and finished products. Chemical tests include, but are not limited to pH and Plato monitoring, alcohol, TA, color, bitterness, DO, and VDKs. Biological tests include, but are not limited to cell counting, microbiological identification, aseptic isolation of bacteria and yeast, yeast propagation, and PCR for spoilage organisms.

Duties & Responsibilities

Food Safety, Quality Management, and Environmental Monitoring:

Develop, implement, and maintain the environmental monitoring program
Develop, implement, and maintain the pre-requisite program
Develop, implement, and maintain the HACCP program
Ensure Parallel 49 follows national food safety guidelines
Review new product labels for compliance with national guidelines
Research and staying up to date with CFIA requirements;
Beer and RTD Analysis which includes but not limited to:

Daily Quality Control (Daily measurement of Plato, Brix Density, and pH);
Alcohol content monitoring (Measurements of alcohol in both FV and BBT);
Fermentation monitoring
Raw Ingredient analysis;
IBU Analysis;
TPO measurement;
Assist the QA Manager in developing new tests;
Yeast Generation Tracking;
Raw ingredient inspection/analysis;
Final BBT QC Sign off (ABV, pH, Taste, micro);
Sample collection
Equipment Calibration & Repair:

pH probe calibration;
Assist in accreditation and audits;
Portable DO Meter calibration & repair;
Centrifuge Calibration;
O2 and CO2 calibration & maintenance;
Assist QA Manager to run sensory activities
Maintain a clean and safe work area according to established policies and procedures;
Keep the lab compliant to required standards;
R&D

Assist in Research & Development for new products;
Communication

Maintaining open & positive relationships with ALL departments;
Open communication with Owners and ALL departments;
Responsible to report all quality issues or deficiencies to the QA Manager;
Perform all other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications

B. Sc in Food Science or Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) related field of study
1+ years of experience working in Quality required;
Demonstrated previous Quality experience in the food or beverage industry is an asset;
Knowledge of HACCP required,
Experience with microbiology and molecular techniques (PCR) is an asset
Demonstrate strong communication skills;
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, but love collaborating within a team;
Ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines;
May be required to work different hours or weekends;
Proficiency with MS Office (Excel and Word);

Salary: $36,607.00-$42,000.00 per year
